River

I come from the ocean
fed by many sources
and like Poseiden's horses
I am wild and scattered different ways

You are the water flowing
steady as that old man
carving out your own land
your water digs deeper every day

In the dawning of the spring
your words bubble up to greet me
and the river starts to sing
as it takes us down to the sea

In the brightness of the noon
all of time seems to stretch out before us
though the leaving comes so soon
we'll meet again in evening's chorus

I had followed the water's sound
to chase that river down
now there's no more need to roam
you've brought me home

Now we will take our time
meander and sway in no straight lines
we'll go to lands never seen
I'll let you get me dirty then you'll wash me clean
the river it seems to know
to catch all small gestures in its flow

In the embers of the day
I memorize your motion
and the river in its play
as its slipping to the ocean

So many places we can go
and the stories that they know
I can see them spread out far
it's who we are
