Disclaimer

One of the main sections of this website is the Chords/Lyrics Database section. This section contains an ever growing database of lyrics and chords for the songs that the Chapin's have written. The Chapin Office has allowed us to post the chords for Harry's songs. As time goes by, if I can secure permissions (not to mention time) from the other artists we will include the chords for them as well.

The chords listed here are strictly Scott Sivakoff's interpretations. There may be places where some of them are lacking (especially with the naming of some of the chords). I would very happily accept suggestions for changes.

The chords listed here are to be used for educational purposes only. Misuse MAY result in the removing of the chords from the site.

Several people were extremely valuable in helping us with the figuring out of the chords. Of course, I learned a lot from watching and talking to both Steve and Tom Chapin. In addition, David Underwood and Nancy Heller were very helpful (especially with "Corey's Coming", "The Parade's Still Passing By" and "The Day They Closed The Factory Down"). I would like to extend a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone that helped.

Listen

  • A Quiet Little Love Affair
  • In the early 80's, Harry and the band were working on demo's for the "Last Protest Singer" album. What was released in 1988 was re-recorded music (using studio musicians) with Harry's voice dubbed (from the demo sessions) over it. Most of the songs sound generally the same from the demo versions to the studio versions. However, this song was slightly different. Notice the addition of the bridge towards the end. Also, the musicians playing are all from Harry's band. This is posted here with permission from the Chapin Office.

  • Pigeon Run
  • Harry intended this song for the Sniper and Other Love Songs album. When Elektra cut the album from a double album to a single album, this song got lost in the mix and was never released to the public. Harry did, however, perform it live on occasion. It also made an appearance in the show "The Night That Made America Famous". This version is a live version from 1974 (original band), from the Cowtown Ballroom in Kansas City. This song is posted here with permission from The Chapin Office.

  • So They Sail (Seasons And The Sky)
  • This song was never released in any format. This recording is certainly not a final product recording. The mix definitely needs a little work and this is a generation or two deep. However, it is a great listen to a previously, never released song. This song is posted here with permission from The Chapin Office.

  • Cry For My Country
  • This song was part a TV show that Harry and the band did called "Listen To America". The show was hosted by Gabe Pressman in the mid 70's. This song is posted here with permission from The Chapin Office.

  • Flowers Are Red
  • Jenny
  • These are alternate versions "Flowers Are Red" and "Jenny". They were either outtakes from "Living Room Suite" or later versions of the songs recorded as singles after "Living Room Suite."

These are both studio recordings. Notice that Steve Chapin and John Wallace play the role of the teacher in this version of "Flowers Are Red" and that the music is considerably different from that on "Living Room Suite" and "Legends Of The Lost and Found". Also, the version of "Jenny" more closely follows the live version of this song. These songs are posted here with permission from The Chapin Office.

Site History

This website is maintained by Scott Sivakoff. The site itself has a history that goes back to around the early 2000's. My very good friend Steve Gibbons and I started this site and maintained it for many years. Originally, Steve handled all the technical details while I handled the content. Sadly, Steve passed away several years ago and maintainence of the site has since become fully my reponsibility. I have tried to maintain it as best as I can over the years, but the site was well overdue for a new look.

Originally, the site was intended to be a place to find charts with guitar chords for all of Harry's songs (as not all of them have been published in the various songbooks that are out there). I spent months trying to decipher the chords (by ear) to the songs that for which I didn't have charts. With the help of some other good friends (namely Dave Underwood and Nancy Heller) as well as the help of the band (Big John Wallace, Howie Fields) and the Chapin's themselves (Harry (via videos), Tom, Steve), I tried to compile as complete (and correct) of a collection of Harry's songs as I could (admittedly - yes, there are several spots with plenty of mistakes that I hope to correct).

As a fan site, we also tried to add other helpful features (searching for lyrics, the old Trader's Circle (now, long defunct)), some rare and unreleased songs that you may not have heard before, etc.

Our goal from the beginning was never to make this site "just another Harry Chapin Only" website, but rather a site that celebrates the entire Chapin Family's musical talent (because there is just so much of it). It is my hope to continue that. You will still be able to find all the Harry Chapin song chords here (posted with permission from the Chapin Office). As time permits and if I can secure permissions from the rest of the family, I may post chord charts for songs from other Chapin Family members as well.

Note: Original Text from the Original Website

Of course none us of would be here without Harry and his awesome ability to tell stories in the fewest amount of words imaginable. If anything, Scott and Steve are just trying to keep the magic going. Through some S.R.M. (stark raving magic - or madness?) we're trying to pull the circle a little closer together. We would be remise in not thanking Harry (albeit posthumously) for inspiring us... Harry - we could not have paid you any more of a tribute. But we hope that you know you grabbed our minds and hearts way back then and you're still touching so many people.

We would also like to thank the entire Chapin family... Everyone from "Poppa Jim" down to "Jenny and her cousins" and everyone in between. The work that they do is great and we love every minute (and note) of it. Each and every one of you has rapt our attention and you inspire us to try and help the world a better place. For better or worse, we seem to live by the motto "when in doubt - do something!"
